On 6 August 2018, Covestro announced the launch of the brand name Maezio for its continuous fibre-reinforced thermoplastic composites (CFRTP). According to the manufacturer, these products are set to tap into the growing demand worldwide for strong and light materials that contribute to resource conservation and energy efficiency. From mobility and electronics industries to consumer goods and medical products, OEMs and part suppliers can benefit from the performance capabilities of CFRTP composites while enjoying cost-effective and scalable manufacturing solutions, said Covestro.

Sika has agreed to acquire Polypag, a Swiss-based manufacturer and developer of polyurethane foam systems, from FLM Holding AG. Financial details were not disclosed. In 2017, Polypag recorded annual sales of approximately CHF 40 million (~ EUR 34.7 million) with a workforce of 120 employees. The company was founded in Altstätten, Switzerland, in 1980. The acquisition encompasses Polypag’s headquarters along with the production site in Altstätten, a research and development centre in Canton Appenzell, and a production site at Landsberg am Lech, Germany. The transaction is subject to approval by the competition authorities.

On 2 August 2018, the Australian polyurethane systems house Era Polymers announced that two of its PU foam products were used by Tafe student Kristina Melnikova to prototype and create the design of the “Moxie Chair” that has won the 2015 Australian Contemporary Emerging Design Award. Kristina Melnikova was assisted with guidance in using the PU foams by Will Huntley, Artistic Representative at the moulding material specialists Kirkside Products.

Covestro announced that it will significantly expand its global film production to meet the growing demand in all regions. In particular, capacity expansions are planned at the sites in Map Ta Phut, Thailand, in Guangzhou, China, in South Deerfield, MA, USA, and in Dormagen, Germany. The total investment of more than EUR 100 million also includes the expansion of the associated infrastructure and logistics. According to current planning, over 100 new jobs will be created worldwide for the operation of the new plants.
