FGV Group chief executive officer Datuk Haris Fadzilah Hassan said the expansion will be done through its subsidiary, FGV Rubber Industries Sdn Bhd (FGVRI).

The European Investment Bank (EIB) and Borealis have closed a benchmark financing agreement that supports the Borealis research, development and innovation (RDI) programme in the circular economy sphere. The EIB will provide a EUR 250 million loan supporting the company’s multi-year investment programme in the area of plastics circularity, in line with its objectives to support innovation, climate action and sustainability. The loan enables Borealis to intensify the development of new polyolefins-based circular solutions at its Innovation Centres in Austria, Sweden and Finland. Polyolefins produced by the company are used in a wide range of applications in consumer products, packaging, power transmission cabling, and industrial and construction materials.

The Vietnam Rubber Group JSC (VRG) plans to invest in tyre and tube production via mergers and acquisitions (M&As) over affiliate companies of the Vietnam Chemical Group (Vinachem). In a recent meeting with the Committee for Management of State Capital (CMSC), VRG said that they were focusing on restructuring the business, increasing investment in the rubber industry, adding that the M&As would help close the value chain of rubber tyre and tube products. Currently, VRG is focusing on five main activities of planting and processing rubber latex, processing rubberwood, processing rubber industrial products, running industrial parks on rubber cultivation land and high-tech agriculture.

The Malaysian Rubber Export Promotion Council (MREPC), an agency under the Ministry of Plantation Industries and Commodities (MPIC), has been rebranded as the Malaysian Rubber Council (MRC) with immediate effect. This change comes with an expanded role as it seeks to drive the growth of Malaysia’s rubber product industry. In a statement issued on 25 Sept 2020, the MRC said it had received regulatory approval for the name change following a rebranding directive announced by Minister Datuk Dr Mohd Khairuddin Aman Razali in early August.

Production of natural rubber is expected to decrease for the rest of 2020 and into early 2021, said the International Tripartite Rubber Council (ITRC). Representatives of ITRC member countries, namely Thailand, Indonesia and Malaysia (TIM), said the decline is attributed mainly to erratic weather, declining tapping activities due to the Covid-19 pandemic, and the Pestalotiopsis leaf fall disease.

Eleven leading companies from six countries have founded the Renewable Carbon Initiative (RCI) under the leadership of nova-Institute (Germany).The initiative was officially launched in a virtual press conference on 23 September 2020.
