Huntsman’s composite resin technology Vitrox wins CPI Innovation Award 2012

Vitrox Composite Resins is a polyurethane-based pipe repair system. The product won this year’s Center for the Polyurethanes Industry’s (CPI) Innovation Award. This was announced by CPI’s Senior Director Lee Salamone at the closing session of the CPI conference in Atlanta, GA, USA.

"Vitrox resins truly qualify as a forward-thinking advancement for the industry," said Keith Day, Vice President Global Business Development, Huntsman Polyurethanes. "Vitrox resins are the world's first polyurethanes-based pipe repair resins in a cure-in-place process. This process is more affordable, efficient and environmentally friendly compared to traditional pipe repair methods."

During the cure-in-place process (CIPP) installation, a resin-saturated felt liner made of polyester is inverted into a damaged pipe using compressed air or water. Steam or hot water is then applied to the saturated liner, aiding the resin to cure, which allows a seal to be created around the damaged area. This process allows significant time and cost-savings in the repair of broken sewer pipes.

Vitrox resins provide a long handling window, fast curing time and excellent high temperature resistance properties. The processing time is about 3 h. Huntsman’s Partner in the project is I.S.T. Innovative Sewer Technologies, based in Bochum, Germany.

Marc Brokaert, Huntsman, presented the Vitrox project at the opening session of the CPI conference. The CPI Innovation Award recognizes companies and individuals whose dedicated efforts bring new products, technologies and initiatives to the marketplace. A panel of judges evaluates and score all entries based on impact on the polyurethanes industry, uniqueness of the innovation, quality of the science and societal impact. The attendees then choose their favorite among three finalists.
