KOREA (SOUTH): Samsung Total develops eco-friendly polypropylene catalyst

Samsung Total said on 25 Feb. 2014 that it has succeeded in mass-production of a polypropylene catalyst that contains no phthalate, a plasticizer known to cause interference with the mammal hormone system.

The company said it was recently notified from the Fraunhofer Society of Germany that it found no phthalate in the environmentally friendly catalyst developed by Samsung Total. Phthalates are reported to interfere with the production of male reproductive hormones in animals. The EU is set to ban the import, production, and use of phthalates starting next year.

A Samsung Total official said, "As the government is strengthening environmental regulations including the law regarding chemical material registration and evaluation, many companies are rushing to develop alternative catalysts that are environmentally friendly. But this is the first instance in which a Korean company develops a new catalyst and succeeds in commercialization."
