UNITED ARAB EMIRATES: First Borouge 3 expansion production exported through ADT’s Khalifa port

The first shipment of products from the Borouge 3 expansion project has been exported through Khalifa Port, which is managed and operated by Abu Dhabi Terminals (ADT).

Borouge, a joint venture of Abu Dhabi National Oil Co. and Borealis, earlier this year started up its third ethane cracker in Ruwais, Abu Dhabi, and said it expected the USD 4.5-billion third phase expansion to be completely on stream by the end of 2014.

In addition to the 1.5-million-t/y ethylene cracker, the expansion includes two Borstar enhanced polyethylene (PE) plants with a combined capacity of 1.08-million t/y, a 350,000-t/y low-density PE plant and two Borstar enhanced polypropylene facilities having a total capacity of 960,000 t/y. With completion, Borouge noted it will have increased its total polyolefins capacity to 4.5-million t/y from 2-million t/y.

In addition to logistics services and storage facilities provided by ADT, the two companies in June signed an agreement under which ADT will build and operate a packaging facility for Borouge’s export products at Khalifa Port.
