KOREA (SOUTH): Kumho Tires offers first-ever tire warranty
It is the first time that a tire maker has introduced the mileage-based warranty service in South Korea where drivers’ rough driving style, including frequent and sudden stop-and-go driving, causes quicker tread wear on tires, as well as increased fuel consumption.
“Compared to other countries, tires are worn away too quickly in Korea largely due to people’s tough driving habits. That’s why companies have thus far been reluctant to offer a mileage warranty,” said Ryan J. Kang, a PR manager at Kumho Tires.
“We may be at a risk for additional costs. But by starting the new service for the first time in Korea, we wanted to prove our product quality,” he said, adding that tire makers, including Kumho, have already carried out similar warranty programs in the United States.
The new service was applied to tires that were purchased starting 1 April. Customers are required to receive regular checkups every 10,000 kilometers of driving, Kumho said. When their mileage reaches 60,000 kilometers, they can receive discounts on new purchases depending on the tire condition, the company said.
Kim added that customers would also have renewed awareness about proper driving habits as they are given driving tips for making their tires last longer and maintain an appropriate amount of traction.
