PVC-free solutions for strictly regulated applications
Actega DS is specialised in materials for strictly-regulated markets such as food, beverage, pharmaceutical and medical industries. The TPE compounder early started the development of PVC-free technologies. In the 1980s it successfully established PVC-free materials for crown caps and aluminum caps on the market. A product for metal/plastic composite cap has been launched in 2006 which is able to withstand sterilisation process. The development of PVC-free materials for vacuum metal closures started in 2005. In 2008, Actega presented the first Provalin prototype and in 2010 the variant 1241 was launched as a comprehensive sealing compound for products with a high oil/fat content in twist-off caps. Only recently the company announced that Andechser Natur uses Provalin for its yoghurt lids.
Wittenburg expands medical product range
Soft medical TPE applications have been the main focus for Wittenburg in the last years. Now it was announced that the Dutch group will strengthen the medical product portfolio in the area of hard specialty engineering plastic compounds. To the base polymers functionalities like X-ray and/or metal detectable, lubricated, thermal conductive, electrical conductive, etc. can be added. Engineering plastic compounds are supplied by Wittenburg’s sister company Witcom.
One-stop service for hard/soft material solutions
Plastic Technologie Service GmbH (PTS) is a specialist for hard/soft combinations, radiation crosslinked thermoplastics and high-performance compounds. For Fakuma 2012 PTS announced several new developments: Scratch-resistant foams (skin types) with adhesion to polypropylene, HT polymers including radiation crosslinking and shielding technology as well as materials for selective electro-plating.
Enplast introduces new TPVs
Following the acquisition of Polyprime in the United States, Enplast recently introduced a new TPV series to the European markets. The EzPrene series currently consists of nine types ranging in hardness from 55 Shore A to 50 Shore D. This series complements the company’s Enflex VL and VU family of general-purpose elastomers for applications in the automotive, construction, and plumbing industries. Enplast said the EzPrene series employs a proprietary cure technology and that the products are non-hygroscopic, therefore they do not need to be dried prior to processing. For each of the members of the EzPrene family there are grades available that are marketed specifically for applications in colour. The materials in the series are comparable to conventional TPVs in terms of strength and elasticity, in regard to colourability and the eliminiation of pre-drying they outperform them.
Teknor Apex presents expanded TPE capabilities at Fakuma
Teknor Apex Europe announced that for the first time it can produce at its plants in Belgium and the UK compounds spanning the entire range of TPE chemistries developed worldwide by the company headquartered in Pawtucket, RI, USA. Teknor Apex Europe manufactures compounds in four product families: styrenics, vulcanisates, olefinics and over-moulding compounds for industries as diverse as automotive, medical, consumer, and wire and cable. Besides its compounding plants in Europe, the company produces TPEs at five sites in the United States and one in Singapore
DKT 2012: Premiere of the TPE Forum
The extensive lecture programme of the DKT conference includes a two-day TPE forum, held from 3-4 July (room Amsterdam). The concept of the TPE Forum has been developed in cooperation with the Technical Committee of the VDI unit “Engineered polymer materials”, which was responsible for the programme.
Kraiburg TPE
The TPE compounder will inform about latest developments in the field of drinking water applications. The compounds of the DW series meet all key requirements for products that are in direct contact with drinking water; applications may include plumbing seals, filtration demand, showerheads or design elements in and around fittings.
Allod
Allod develops and manufactures customised TPEs under the brand name Allruna. The materials are suitable for injection moulding, extrusion and blow moulding, as well as other special processing technologies.
Velox
Velox will highlight at DKT benefits of the additives of the Spanish company Avanzare. They have been developed for use in coloured compounds and ESD systems. The products are marketed under the brand name avanstatic.
